Attributes of a Proprietor's Appointee

  • Be a committed, practising Catholic, actively involved in the life of your parish and have a willingness to further develop your understanding and knowledge of Church teaching.
  • Be willing to represent the Bishop's position and views on the Board of Trustees.
  • Have the willingness and ability to maintain Diocesan policy, even if such policy is unpopular.
  • Be willing to bring a Gospel perspective to all Board business.
  • Possess good communication skills and exercise discretion.
  • Have analytical skills.
  • Be willing and able to attend Board meetings on a regular basis.
  • Be passionate in the desire for children to receive a good Catholic education.
  • One of the appointees should be the Parish Priest associated with the school.

 

It would be an asset if a Proprietors Appointee had experience in one or more of the following:

  • Education in general.
  • Catholic education in particular.
  • Policy/decision making.
  • Governance/management.
  • Employment of staff.

 

After spending time on the Board of Trustees, and with training provided, it would be anticipated that Proprietor's Appointees would begin to develop and acquire:

  • A working knowledge of the Diocesan legal position in respect of the Private Schools Conditional Integration (PSCI) Act, Education Act and other relevant legislation.
  • A working knowledge of Diocesan policies regarding schools and a working knowledge of the national policies, procedures and information contained in the Handbook for Boards of Trustees of New Zealand Catholic Integrated Schools
  • A working knowledge of the financial position of the Diocese in relation to schools.
  • A growing understanding of the spiritual, theological and liturgical aspects of Catholic education.
  • An understanding of staff recruitment, appointment and in-service matters.
  • A familiarity with curriculum areas, particularly the place of religious education in the curriculum and its relationship to all other aspects of school life.
